Because I use text editor all the time, I have found it quite effective to save the IDF in the .rtf format for commenting and including charts, and pictures or figures from the manual.
It is still possible to use cut and paste between the .rtf and .idf. Fonts and colour would be removed by the .idf, when it is saved in text only format again. By design, the IDF is a flat ASCII text file -- does not
incorporate images well -- however you could add links to your images --
as documentation. though the links might not be active with most
text editors -- could be copied and pasted.
