What is the location? When the sun comes up in the east it is low to the horizon. Direct beam might come in underneath the shade overhang. Same for east. On the north side, shade or no shade should be roughly the same as on north the diffuse radiation is getting in under the shade roughly as much as without the shade.

by the way, a similar shading device (an overhang) on the south windows has the expected effect on the loads. it is the west facade that is problematic, for some reason......
