RE: [EnergyPlus_Support] Re: Need help for Naturally Ventilated Model

Joe,

The coupling between EnergyPlus and CONTAM is the quasi-dynamic (so-called ping-pong), and is based on the Functional Mock-up Interface for Co-simulation specification.
The aforementioned journal article addresses the limitations of the quasi-dynamic method which does benefit from shorter time steps, and it also presents a comparison with the Airflow Network model (AFN).
We have applied the coupled modeling to a net zero residential model and a few of the DOE commercial reference buildings with very promising results.

Poppendieck, D., S. Khurshid, W. S. Dols, L. C. Ng, B. J. Polidoro and S. J. Emmerich (2016). Formaldehyde Concentrations in a Net-Zero Energy House: Real-time Monitoring and Simulation. Indoor Air 2016. Ghent, Belgium.

Ng, L. C., D. Poppendieck, W. S. Dols and S. J. Emmerich (2016). Evaluating IAQ and Energy Impacts of Ventilation in a Net-Zero Energy House Using a Coupled Model. IAQ 2016. Alexandria, VA, ASHRAE and AIVC.

However, the CONTAM3DExport can also be used to create IDF geometry, albeit for rectilinear configurations, with fairly robust results.
It can also be used to generate the AFN sub-surfaces that can be somewhat cumbersome to create.
Once one has the IDF file with geometry, they can modify it with SketchUp/OpenStudio, IDF Editor, etc.

Of course I may be biased, but I believe the ContamW interface is not that difficult to master for the purposes of generating these building models.

Stuart,

That's interesting information! Does running CONTAM3DExport result in a tighter or a looser coupling between EnergyPlus and the airflow modeling? When I worked on the first implementation of an airflow model (COMIS) into EnergyPlus back in the day, it was what Jan Hensen would call a "ping-pong" and not an "onion" approach. One of the dirty secrets from my work was finding that the solutions would oscillate by time step. I had proposed making the link a half-onion (??) , i.e., redo the thermal calculation using the air flows computed by the air flow modeling, but unfortunately my funding got cut just at that point.

> The EnergyPlus documentation should explain the IDF objects that are used for the multi-zone air-flow modelling, which are very much tied to the thermal modeling of the building, i.e., walls, windows, doors, etc., except that instead of defining their thermal properties you are defining their air-flow properties, such as leakage area, and in the case of windows their operating schedules.

> Bear in mind that EnergyPlus is using the AIRNET program to do the multi-zone air flow modeling. If you want more information about this that you don't find in the EnergyPlus documentation, you could also look at the CONTAM User Manual (<http://www.bfrl.nist.gov/IAQanalysis/CONTAM/userguide.htm>www.bfrl.nist.gov/IAQanalysis/CONTAM/userguide.htm ). CONTAM is the successor program to AIRNET with a user-friendly GUI added.
