Helen,

   If you're working with Michael Wetter and Genopt, I gave him a 
"solution" yesterday.  Essentially, it would involve running the ReadVars 
program for each variable that you need.  You can specify numbers for the 
variables there or names and it only produces (at the moment) one value -- 
the first value on the "line" -- which is what you want.
