Re: [EnergyPlus_Support] Problems with extracting hourly variables from EnergyPlus

Joe,
For heat flux you want load normalized by area correct?   These are conduction I believe after radiation and before convection... You might actually want to use convection dependent on your goal, however prior to v7.2 the first two variables below were called heat flux.

Surface Inside Face Conduction Heat Transfer Rate per Area [W/m2]
Surface Outside Face Conduction Heat Transfer Rate per Area [W/m2]

I find that the "average" or "storage" are the most useful.

Surface Average Face Conduction Heat Transfer Rate per Area [W/m2]
Surface Heat Storage Rate per Area [W/m2]

Mmm...there are usually report variables availible for surfaces. The keyword "surface" should be in there somewhere. The variables you mentioned seem mainly "zone average" types which apply to all the zone facing surfaces. The "surface" variables you need, you'll need to replace the wild card '*' with the specific surface name. You'll obviously be looking for radiation and convection rates from this specific surface.

I've only looked at temperature until now, but I'm sure Jerimia has controlled the heat flows more concisely.

Post the rdd...some of the variable names have changed in the v8 release, but we could try and filter out the right ones.

Thanks to Jeremiah, Linda, and Jean for their replies and tips.

I wasn't aware of the Output:VariableDictionary,IDF; and *.rdd features in EnergyPlus, and am now able to get some of the hourly variables of interest.

However, I still haven't an output variable giving the net heat flow from an interior surface into a zone. What I see in the *.rdd are just these five variables for interior surfaces:

Output:Variable,*,Surface Int Adjacent Air Temperature,hourly; !- Zone Average [C]
Output:Variable,*,Surface Int Convection Coeff,hourly; !- Zone Average [W/m2-K]
Output:Variable,*,Surface Int Convection Heat Rate,hourly; !- Zone Average [W]
Output:Variable,*,Surface Int Convection Heat Rate per Area, hourly; !- Zone Average [W/m2]
Output:Variable,*,Surface Int Convection Heat Gain to Air,hourly; !- Zone Sum [J]

I've extracted the 3rd and 5th ones, but found they were the same when converted to the same units. They also seem too small to be the total heat flow from the surface. Are there any other variables that track the radiative heat flow or the conductive heat flow from the surface?

Joe

I'm with Jerimia on this one:
Specify the output variable dictionary to output an .rdd file in IDF format.
Run the simulation to produce the rdd file (which will list all the possible output variables for your simulation).
Open the rdd in a text editor, and copy paste the output variables that you want to include in your simulation and re-run.

The trickiest part are the definitions of the different outputs. You'll have to search the documentation for the ones which look interesting.

I'm doing some diagnostic simulations comparing EnergyPlus to another program (not DOE-2 :-)), and need to extract hourly variables for zone air temperature, inside surface temperature and heat fluxes through an interior wall. I took some old IDFs from 6 years ago, ran them through the IDFVersionUpdater to get Version 8.0 IDFs, and used the resultant reporting for the zone air temperature, but I'm not getting anything in the output *.eso.

Output:Variable,*,Site Outdoor Air Drybulb Temperature,Monthly; < this works
Output:Variable,*,Zone/Sys Air Temp,Hourly; < this does not work
Output:Variable,*,Zone Air System Sensible Cooling Rate,Monthly; < this works
Output:Variable,*,Zone Air System Sensible Heating Rate,Monthly; < this does not work

Also, what is the syntax for specifying the heat flux for a particular surface ? I tried this but it doesn't work:

 Output:Variable,
 *, !- Key_Value
 HOUSE:AT-FLOOR2 Heat Flow, !- Variable_Name
 Hourly; !- Reporting_Frequency

Thanks
