Have you looked for an example file which uses batteries?  Those are a good place to start; the examples always work and show you the node definitions and components that are needed for proper operation.

A couple of examples with Batteries and Storage, use the ElectricLoadCenter:Distribution to tie the battery in, however, after trying this I am still unable to "use" the battery.

There was a user that had a similar issue. From memory, the message from Linda then was to make sure that there is a load requiring power from the battery, else you won't see it working.
